Born in Warrington, George came through the youth setup at Crewe Alexandra.
Signing professional terms in 2011-12, he gained his first playing experience during a loan spell at Leek Town later that season, scoring 3 goals in 12 appearances for the Harrison Park side — a good scoring rate for a defender.
Ray was given his professional Crewe debut against Southend United on 7th April 2013, notable because it was the Football League Trophy final at Wembley. He left the pitch having helped the Railwaymen to a 2-0 victory. As a last-minute substitute, George had played at Wembley and won a trophy within seconds of making his debut!
His stock rose, with George making 5 appearances for the Wales Under-21 side between 2013 and 2014.
At club level, Ray continued to progress, signing further deals at Gresty Road in 2014 and 2017, the second of which coming after he was named captain.
Over 8 years as a professional with Crewe, Ray amassed 152 appearances and 5 goals. However, he decided to leave in the summer of 2019.
On 25th June 2019, George signed a 2-year contract at Prenton Park, the move to Tranmere the first permanent move of Ray's career. At 6-feet-4-inches tall, he brings size, experience and leadership to the Rovers defence for 2019-20 and beyond.
Interesting Fact: George was the first player to make his professional debut in a Wembley cup final, playing in Crewe Alexandra's 2-0 win over Southend United in the 2013 Football League Trophy final.
